The Raptor Center’s main goal is to rehabilitate birds of prey (raptors) to release back into the wild. It started as a backyard affair involving two Sitka residents and one injured bald eagle, and escalated from there.

Now the center is large non-profit organization: a combination bald eagle hospital, educational center, and visitor attraction. Each year it provides medical treatment to up to 200 injured bald eagles and other birds. When the birds are injured too badly to survive in the wild, they join the other raptors-in-residence spread over the 17 acres of natural habitat on the Raptor Center’s campus.

More than 36,000 visitors come to the center each year to watch and learn about the permanent residents which include bald and golden eagles, hawks, falcons and owls. The center also runs an Adopt-A-Raptor program and gives classroom presentations around the country, reaching 15,000 school children annually.

Dedicated volunteers and innovative veterinary medicine are what have made the center such a success. As well as rehabilitation, they also focus on teaching visitors about environmental conservation and conducting bald eagle research.

While at the center, you can walk the pathways, watching the various birds and talking to the knowledgeable staff on site. You can also go inside the center for informational programs and talks to learn more, and you can browse the gift shop.
